Even though there are pop stars that performed as part of the soundtrack, I think that simply allows the viewers to adapt their views independently.
I agree that the visuals were a little over-the-top, but I thought it was appropriate. The setting and characters are glitzy and flashy, so I thought it was fitting that the cinematography was as well. I also thought that the continuous playing of Young and Beautiful was a nice addition because it represented the Gatsby and Daisy's story. I do agree that Tobey Maguire was poorly cast as Nick. Every time he spoke I felt myself wishing they would put DiCaprio back on the screen.

I have yet to see the movie, but from the commercials I could see that the music was over the top, and the depictions of the 1920's was really unrealistic, even for Baz Luhrmann. I think each of the characters fits their role, particularly DiCaprio as Gatsby and Maguire as Carraway. Though, just as a pre-viewing opinion, I don't agree with the actress choice of Daisy.

Although I did find the movie to be extremely unrealistic, I thought that it did a good job of portraying each of the characters as I imagined them while reading the book. I thought that the effects were nothing less than amazing, but I do agree that it is as if the director is almost showing off with the amount of unnecessary cinematography.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I have heard mixed reviews about it. Some of the people i talked to loved it, and others couldn't stand it. Baz Luhrmann going over the top with things has also been a common trend though, but most say the acting was great. I still pan on checking this movie out despite some of the flaws that continue to be pointed out.

I guess the movie did not live up to the expectations it had. I haven't seen it & still want to just to see how bad it is and to see Leonardo DiCaprio. Overall, great review.
